Key Stage 3

In Year 7 students start the year by studying and using map skills about their local area and the school environment. Students investigate weathering and coastal processes and look at how flooding can be managed in the UK. Students explore the geography of the UK as well as studying a unit about Africa.

In Year 8 students start the year by studying a unit about the diverse ecosystems around the world. They also look at the rapid development and changes taking place in India as well as studying topics about economic activity and weather & climate.  

In Year 9 students complete units of work about natural hazards, China, development and people and places. They will study up to date and topical events that are often found in the news.

Students will complete a number of National Curriculum Assessments in Geography. Students are asked to link people and places together, as well as explain and analyse reasons for changes occurring in places today. They are asked to consider the sustainability of different options and how these will affect the future.

Fieldwork opportunities for students at Key Stage 3 focus on using the school grounds and the local area to carry out a variety of surveys, a weathering walk and study the ecosystem of a local pond.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 & 11 students will complete units of work about:

  • Rivers and coasts e.g. Why does flooding occur?
  • Population and settlement e.g. A study of Chesterfield
  • Natural hazards e.g. Hurricane Katrina
  • Economic development e.g. transnational companies like Nike
  • Sustainable development e.g. impact of tourism

and will develop key skills in:

  • Map reading
  • Drawing maps, sketches, graphs
  • Field work - collecting information
  • Extended writing
  • ICT and communication skills 

Course Assessment

  • 25% Coursework – Field work about Chesterfield (Year 10) and a research based essay (Year 11)
  • 25% Sustainable Decision Making Exercise (Year 11)
  • 50% Terminal Exam (Year 11)
